 Distance Visual Acuity Charts:

 Snellen Chart: The Snellen chart is the most widely used chart for measuring distance visual acuity. It consists of multiple rows of letters, with each row representing a specific visual acuity level. The letters decrease in size as you move down the chart. The visual acuity is expressed as a fraction, with the numerator representing the testing distance and the denominator indicating the distance at which a person with normal vision can read the line.

 ETDRS Chart: The Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study (ETDRS) chart is a standardized chart used for clinical research and in more advanced clinical settings. It uses letters similar to the Snellen chart but follows a logarithmic progression in letter size. This allows for more precise measurement of visual acuity.

 Landolt C Chart: The Landolt C chart uses the letter "C" in different orientations (up, down, left, right) instead of traditional letters. The patient is asked to identify the direction in which the C is facing. This chart is particularly useful when testing individuals who cannot read or recognize letters.

 

Near Visual Acuity Charts:

 Jaeger Chart: The Jaeger chart is commonly used for measuring near visual acuity. It consists of paragraphs of text with varying font sizes. The patient is asked to read the text at a standard reading distance, and the smallest font size they can read accurately determines their near visual acuity. The measurement is expressed as a fraction, such as J1, J2, etc., with a smaller denominator indicating better acuity.

 MNREAD Chart: The MNREAD chart is a standardized chart that uses sentences with progressively decreasing font sizes. It provides a more detailed assessment of near visual acuity and reading speed. The patient reads the sentences, and the smallest font size they can read accurately determines their near visual acuity.

 Lighthouse Near Vision Test: This test uses a chart with rows of numbers or letters of varying sizes. The patient reads the characters at a standard near distance, and the smallest size they can accurately identify determines their near visual acuity.

 The principles behind these charts involve presenting standardized optotypes (letters, numbers, or symbols) of varying sizes to assess the smallest details a person can recognize at a given distance. The visual acuity measurement is determined by the size of the optotype a person can accurately identify or read.
